The GRAMMYs
From hit songs and albums and her world tours and movie roles, she was eventually labeled as the most awarded female singers of all time, with over titles. Many of this was made possible after she appeared in her first film, The Bodyguard. The success of the film and its soundtrack put the singer in a different league that would keep her at the top of the charts as one of the highest-grossing artists for years after its release. Whitney Houston burst onto the scene as the beloved protegee of respected record executive, Clive Davis. In fact, they spent a full two years working on her first studio album before its release. Whitney Houston spent 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard and was certified 13x platinum, reaching Diamond status.

It's been 25 years since the release of The Bodyguard soundtrack, and the song collection continues to hold the record for best-selling music from a film, boasting a staggering sales total of more than 45 million copies worldwide. Of course, the feat can be attributed largely to the appeal of late pop queen Whitney Houston , who co-starred in the film and contributed six songs, among them her jaw-dropping version of Dolly Parton 's ballad "I Will Always Love You" that features Houston delivering arguably the best female pop vocal performance of all time. Released just weeks before the film debuted, "I Will Always Love You" opens with a piercingly sweet a cappella melody and the chorus soars into a string of impressive, triumphant vocal acrobatics. Like a movie trailer, the music video builds interest in the film, previewing highlight clips as Houston sings the lead song. Looking back on this milestone anniversary, The Bodyguard lead actor and co-producer Kevin Costner says Houston was his first and only pick to portray his female co-lead, Rachel Marron, a larger-than-life pop star with magnetism and depth. It would be difficult to argue with Costner's point. Houston, a stunning former model, was already a pop star of the magnitude of a fictional character.
By Post Staff Report. He was among eight people close to Houston who addressed the crowd. An excerpted version follows :. Whitney returns home today, to the place where it all began, and I urge us all, inside and outside, across the nation and around the world, to dry our tears, suspend our sorrow, and perhaps our anger, just long enough, just long enough to remember the sweet miracle of Whitney. Never forgetting that Cissy and Bobbi Kristina sit among us. Your mother and I had a lot in common. But our sister could really sing.
