Christian Movie Review

A review of the movie, Nim’s Island from a Christian perspective.

Movie Title: Nim’s Island
Director: Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett
Staring: Abigail Breslin, Jodie Foster, Gerard Butler
Category: Family

Christian Perspective Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Intro: A quirky, heart warming and different movie for the entire family. It was really nice to see Jodie Foster in this role.

Review: When I first rented this movie, I was thinking a Swiss Family Robinson type movie. I was wrong. This is a movie like none I have seen.

Nim has an active imagination and she is on an island alone with her father. They are not stranded. They live on this island by choice. Nim has no human friends except for those in her adventure books collection. However, she has several adorable animals as friends. They do not talk, but, they DO communicate and have intelligence and character.

Through a series of events, Nim’s father (Jack) goes missing for a bit. Obviously, Nim becomes very worried and decides to write to the main character in the adventure books she reads, Alex Rover.

Unfortunately, Alex Rover is not a man OR very adventurous. She is an agoraphobic…someone who does NOT like to go anywhere! LOL! NOT even to her mailbox!

Well, she overcomes her fear, and travels to help poor Nim.

After several comical events (that I will leave out so I do not spoil the move for you) Alex gets to Nim’s Island.

Needless to say, there is a happily ever after type ending which makes this a family movie plus. No sex, no drugs, no crazy stuff. There is a kiss near the end between Alex Rover and Nim’s Dad, Jack. Nothing to write home about though.

Cons: Nim calls her dad Jack a few times. I did not like that. To me, it is disrespectful. Nim also reasoned with her Dad and did not always obey.

Conclusion: Overall, Nim’s Island is a decent family movie in a world of not so good movies. Your kids will like it and you will like it too…at least once! LOL!!

Home Movie Theater System

If you have a big family and you usually bond over watching movies at home then a great way for you to be able to keep this family tradition is by buying your very own home movie theater system. This way you and your family will be able to enjoy your favorite movies in the comfort of your very own home whenever you want as well as whenever everyone’s available.

There is absolutely no need for you to wait in long lines anymore just to see a movie plus you and your family will be able to save more in the end considering that you will be making your own popcorn or buy your other snacks from the local grocery as opposed to paying for overpriced snacks at the theater.

If you are thinking of shopping for your very own home movie theater system, do be advised that these things don’t really come cheap. If you are not that picky then you can actually get yourself a secondhand home movie theater system which will of course come with certain kinks and in case you are good with electronics then try to check if the condition of the electronics that you are buying is still worth the price.

Another thing that you can do is get warehouse prices directly from the suppliers of the appliances and electronics. You might score special discounts if you buy a lot of items from them. When shopping for any kind of electronics always remember that you are practically assured of great discounts and equally great after-sales service only if you keep a good business relationship with your suppliers.

Coolest Movies

Great vampire movie with actually two new twists! The first is that the world has been taken over by vampires and they are running low on human blood, and I won’t say what the other is, that would be a big spoiler.

The Book of Eli
Denzel Washington in a post holocaust world on a mission from God, how can that not be cool? Denzel always delivers. I missed this one in the theater, then saw the reviews and they weren’t great, so I put off seeing it. Don’t listen to the critics, it’s a great one.

Shutter Island
Majorly intense movie, I was biting my lip and on the edge of my seat the entire time, and the ending was such a great twist.

Christopher Nolan and Leonardo DiCaprio – amazing together. I think Nolan might steal away DiCaprio from Scorsese.

Saw this at the theater because there was nothing else to see at the time. Ended up liking it quite a bit, really good twist at the end and it keeps you guessing the entire movie. Plus you get to look at Angie the entire time.

The Town
Was looking forward to seeing this one and loved it. After Gone Baby Gone and now The Town, I will be seeing anything Ben Affleck bothers to direct.

Paranormal Activity 2
I thought the first one was freaky, this one actually brought it to another level, well done!

Romantic Movies That’ll Make You Laugh

Romance is serious business. Or is it?

Which do you think your husband would choose if put to the test:
a.) Watch the beautiful tearjerker movie, The Notebook
b.) Do anything that doesn’t involve watching The Notebook

My answer is easy. My husband would opt for a root canal rather than sitting through a movie like The Notebook or Terms of Endearment. Now don’t get me wrong. That doesn’t mean he’s not romantic. The man loves deeper than I could describe. He’s simply not a fan of traditional ‘romance movies’.

Our date nights usually involve Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Owen Wilson, or Jim Carrey. Those men don’t know this, but they’re a huge part of what makes our marriage such a joy. The fact that our date nights consist of a fun movie instead of a forced moment means that my husband is happy and relaxed – two very good things for romance.

Are you looking for a lighthearted fun romantic movie that both you and your husband will enjoy? Here are some of our favorites.

The Princess Bride (1987)

“Is this a kissing book?” The Princess Bride is the story of a woman who is being forced to marry a cold, evil prince, while her true love tries to stop the wedding.

I don’t know how many times I tried to get my husband to watch this movie until finally I just put the movie in, clicked ‘play’, and hid the remote. It’s now one of his favorite movies. He likes it because of the comedy and the fighting. I love it because it’s just a joy to watch.

Groundhog Day (1993)

After reluctantly going to cover Punksatawney Phil for Groundhog Day, a weatherman gets stuck living the same day repeatedly.

This is one of my husband’s all-time favorite movies. Plus, if your husband is a fan of Caddyshack, he’ll appreciate Bill Murray battling a rodent once again.

The Wedding Singer (1998)

Robbie, the wedding singer and Julia, the waitress are both engaged to be married but to the wrong people.

Any man who remembers the 80s will thoroughly enjoy this. And, every woman will be teary-eyed when Robbie sings “Grow Old with You” at the end.

Love Actually (2003)

This movie portrays eight stories of love. It shows romantic love, as well as love of a father for his son, love between siblings, and love of friendship. It’s a beautiful story that shows that Love Actually is All Around. It’s funny on so many levels, but also deeply touching.
